Neighbourhood Watch have sent out an alert that there has been an increase in some areas of Rogue Traders who call door to door trying to obtain work. This can range from cutting hedges/trees through to replacing roof tiles. Some of these callers are charging exorbitant amounts of money for minor work to be done and can also use `hard sell' tactics at times.

This time of year often sees an increase in bogus callers trying to gain access to properties in order to commit a crime (such as stealing items).

Remember: if you are not sure, don't let any stranger into the house. Genuine callers will carry identification and will be happy for it to be checked or for you to arrange a formal appointment for them to attend the property at a later time.

In either case if you have people calling that you are not expecting then you should:

    • LOCK
keep front and back doors locked, even when you are home.

    • STOP
before answering, look to see who the caller is either through a window or spyhole

    • CHAIN
if you decide to open the door put the door chain or door bar on first.

    • CHECK
if callers look official ask for an ID card and check it carefully.

    • REPORT
if you think a caller is bogus, or a rogue trader, then call the police immediately either using the general number 101 or the emergency line 999.

Remember
If you are "not sure - don't open the door
".
